Government Regulations

Dairy Australia actively participates in regulatory reviews and consultation on the state-based regulations that guide dairy production systems.

Regulatory authorities can generally provide guidance on meeting the latest regulatory requirements, including regional officers, and are the best place to start should with a concern or query.

Environmental management and protection in Victoria

Environment Protection Authority Victoria

A new Victorian Environment Protection Act and regulations came into force on 1 July 2021. The new Act and regulations represent a significant change in environmental management across Victoria, with a move from prosecution to prevention.

The centrepiece of the changes is a new General Environmental Duty (GED), which will require all Victorians to take ‘all practicable measures’ to avoid environmental damage. This will operate in a similar way to current WorkSafe arrangements, which farmers are familiar with.

Storage of tyres for use in silage production, management of effluent, and compost production have emerged as the key issues for dairy farm businesses.

Dairy Australia, along with the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria, have been engaging with EPA through the Agriculture Reference Group for over two years. This engagement aims to ensure that the new regulations for on-farm environmental management are commensurate with risk, practical, easy to manage, and do not replicate the extensive risk management processes and procedures that farmers already undertake.

Further information about the changes is available on the EPA website, and in the following documents produced by Dairy Australia:

A series of webinars was held in 2021 for dairy farm businesses on what the changes mean for their day-to-day business operations. You can view the webinar below.
