Australian Grand Dairy Awards finalists

The annual Australian Grand Dairy Awards is a celebration of all things Aussie dairy and determines the ‘best of the best’ in Australian dairy produce. The Awards celebrate and recognise quality, excellence and the refined skills of local Australian producers who craft some of the best dairy product in the world.  

This year’s Awards attracted entries from 33 manufacturers and almost 320 cream-of-the-crop products spanning 18 categories, including milks, yoghurts, ice creams, butter, cream and an array of cheeses.

Despite Covid and severe flooding affecting everything from staffing levels to supply chains, cheese and dairy manufacturers across the nation maintained very high-quality standards. 

Entries came from across the county and resulted in 17 manufacturers from Victoria making the finalist list followed by 12 from Queensland, 10 from Tasmania, six from Western Australia, five from South Australia and four from New South Wales.

All products competing in the Awards were made from Australian milk and had won Gold after a rigorous judging process in the 2022 qualifying State competitions.

Respected dairy educator and Chief Judge, Russell Smith, said the Australian Grand Dairy Awards is all about celebrating and acknowledging local manufacturers for the exceptional dairy and cheese products they’re making for all Aussies to enjoy.

“This year saw the continuing improvement in quality of the Fresh Unripened cheeses, especially the Italian style stretched curd cheese. The quality of these cheeses has improved dramatically over the last decade to the point where the majority really are world class. I see in the retail market the positive response from consumers to not only the quality but also the innovation we’ve seen in the last few years.

“Innovation in gelato and ice cream flavours continues with so many producers adding subtle tweaks to their flavour combinations resulting in some beautifully balanced products.

“Then there were new flavours such as durian which received high praise from the judging panels, despite the challenging flavour profile. Congratulations to all finalists,” said Mr Smith.

Australian Grand Dairy Awards Convener, Georgia Farrell, said “We love our dairy in Australia and each year we consume 15 kilos of cheese and 93 litres of milk per person, so we are thrilled to see the industry continue to produce such an impressive line-up of dairy products from talented, passionate and committed Australian dairy manufacturers.”

Expert judges spent three days in October tasting hundreds of products. Out of the finalists, a winner will be chosen for each dairy category and the highest scoring dairy and cheese products will be crowned as the Grand Champions in early February 2023.
