SDP Advanced Nutrition in Action 2025

Advanced Nutrition in Action is an eight-day program delivered over several months, in a combination of online and face-to-face formats. It is designed for farmers and advisors who already have beginner to intermediate expertise in dairy nutrition and feeding management and are looking to take their capabilities to the next level.

The goal of the program is to improve herd nutrition practices on-farm by providing the technical knowledge, problem solving and strategic planning skills and tools to develop and implement appropriate nutrition related management strategies which support personal and business goals.

The course will commence on Tuesday, 28th January 2025with an online welcome session.

Face-to-face (classroom) sessions are scheduled at Gatton for;

• 25th & 26th February 2025
• 1st & 2nd April 2025
• 29th & 30th April 2025

Completion session 24th June 2025.

Trainers:

David Barber from DairyNEXT Consulting Services will facilitate the sessionsDave has been actively involved in nutrition and milk composition research and extension in Queensland and northern NSW for well over 20 years. He has specialised skills in nutrition management, diet formulation, nutritional requirements of dairy cows, mixed ration feeding systems and feed-pad infrastructure.

Mark Burgemeister fromThinking Cows Pty. Ltd. will join Dave to facilitate some of the later sessions in the course.Mark is a veterinarian with a special interest in dairy cattle health and productivity. He has extensive experience working with agricultural businesses as they encounter a multitude of strategic and tactical issues related to herd nutrition.

Cost:

There is no cost for farmers to attend this course.You will need to arrange your own travel to and from Gatton for the face-to-face sessions.Service providers will have a cost of $1500 per person.

The course objectives for participants are:

talk more productively with other dairy farmers, advisers and product suppliers on the many aspects of herd nutrition;

acquire and apply new approaches, information and tools in herd nutrition management to your farm or your clients farms;

better integrate herd nutrition with the other components of the farm system - feed-base management, animal performance, NRM, farm business management and people;

assess how key aspects of a farms herd nutrition program are performing, and identify and pursue opportunities for improvement;

achieve farm goals related to herd nutrition through more effective teamwork.

Requirements to do the course:

To obtain maximum benefit from this advanced-level course you will need to already have entry level knowledge of herd nutrition and feed management. To confirm this, you will be required you to complete an online multiple choice quiz before your enrolment is accepted.

**You will need a computer to do online modules at home and to bring with you to each workshop for use in activities.
