Global dairy infrastructure experts to share knowledge with Australian farmers

Some of the world’s leading experts in the design and management of dairy feeding and housing infrastructure are coming to Australia in February to share their knowledge with Australian farmers at the ‘Raising the Roof 2024’ event.

Presented by Dairy Australia and Agriculture Victoria, Raising the Roof 2024 will run from Tuesday 27 February to Thursday 29 February in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley. It is the only Australian dairy industry event dedicated exclusively to intensive farm systems, and is designed to help Australian dairy farmers learn global best-practice from international and local experts.

A stellar lineup of global industry experts has been lured to Australia to present at the event according to Karen Romano, Dairy Australia’s National Feeding and Farm Systems Lead.

“Dairy Australia recognises the importance of helping our farmers make informed decisions before investing in feedpad and contained housing infrastructure,” said Romano. “These can often be multi-million dollar investments. Having the opportunity to draw on the expertise of a panel of international experts, who have an intimate understanding of how this sort of infrastructure has been successfully built and managed in Europe and America is a unique opportunity that can help our farmers avoid making costly mistakes.

“We have coaxed four renowned international experts to come to Australia to present at Raising the Roof 2024,” Romano added. Michael Heinrich from GEA Farm Technologies in Europe will present on designing automatic milking systems in contained housing. Alain Houle from the Valmetal Group in the United States will talk on reducing emissions and renewable energy solutions. The topic of ‘Making housing systems an animal-centred environment’ will be covered by US experts Dr Mike Wolf of VES-Artex and Karl Burgi from SaveCows.”

The four international speakers will bolster an already strong line-up of local Australian experts that includes Professor Ian Lean (Scibus), Dr Steve Little (Capacity Ag Consulting), Scott McDonald (Agriculture Victoria), Professor Richard Eckard (University of Melbourne), Clare Fitzpatrick (Progressive Rural Solutions), Tony Anderson (Rural Bank), Claire Waterman (Agriculture Victoria), Sheena Carter (NSW Department of Primary Industries) and Brian Crockart (Agribusiness Solutions).

Attendees at Raising the Roof 2024 will also hear first-hand from a number of Australian dairy farmers who have already successfully transitioned their farm systems. The event will also feature virtual and in-person farm visits showcasing the latest innovative thinking in a range of intensive farm systems.

Raising the Roof 2024 is proudly supported by Eagle Direct (diamond sponsor) and Daviesway, GEA and Rural Bank (platinum sponsors).
