Understanding Farm Carbon Workshop Tamworth

In an ever-evolving dairy industry, understanding and measuring greenhouse gas emissions—often referred to as the "carbon number"—is becoming critical for both regulatory compliance and long-term sustainability. Recognising this need, Dairy Australia has organised the Understanding Farm Carbon Workshop in Tamworth. This workshop will provide dairy farmers with the tools, knowledge, and guidance necessary to assess and reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining productivity and profitability.

With carbon emissions playing a significant role in environmental discussions, it is important for dairy farmers to stay informed about how greenhouse gases, such as methane from cattle and emissions from fertilisers, impact their operations. The workshop will focus on strategies to help farms align with industry emissions reduction targets while also exploring how these strategies can lead to operational efficiencies and environmental benefits.

Key Outcomes of the Workshop:

  1. Understanding Emissions Drivers: Participants will gain a clear understanding of the sources of greenhouse gas emissions on dairy farms, including cattle methane production, fertiliser use, and on-farm carbon stores. This knowledge will help farmers better manage their carbon footprints.
  2. Industry Targets and Technologies: Learn about the dairy industry's emissions reduction targets and explore emerging technologies and farming activities that can help achieve these goals. Additionally, key carbon concepts such as insetting, offsetting, and reduction will be clarified
  3. Carbon Calculation Tools: Attendees will get hands-on experience using the Australian Dairy Carbon Calculator and DairyBase, online tools designed specifically for Australian dairy farms, to accurately measure and track their farm’s carbon emissions.Practical Steps for Reducing Emissions: The workshop will guide participants through actionable strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on their farms, supporting both sustainability and profitability.
  4. Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme: Farmers will be introduced to the ACCU scheme, learning the benefits and risks involved. This session will also provide insight into the due diligence required for participating in carbon farming projects and leveraging ACCUs for financial gains.
