Understanding Farm Carbon Workshops

As the agriculture industry continues to address climate change, understanding and measuring greenhouse gas emissions on dairy farms is becoming essential. The carbon number, which quantifies these emissions, is a key tool that provides farmers with valuable insights to improve productivity, sustainability, and compliance with evolving regulations and market changes.

Carbon workshops

To support dairy farm businesses in navigating these changes, Dairy Australia is hosting a series of Understanding Farm Carbon Workshops across New South Wales. These workshops are designed to help dairy farmers better understand the drivers of greenhouse gas emissions and take proactive steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Workshop Outcomes: What You’ll Learn

  1. Understanding Emissions Drivers: Gain a solid understanding of the factors that influence greenhouse gas emissions on dairy farms, including methane emissions from cattle, fertiliser use, and carbon stores in the soil. Learn how these elements interact and how to manage them for better farm performance and sustainability.

  2. Industry Emissions Reduction Targets: Explore the emissions reduction targets set by the dairy industry. Understand how farm activities and the adoption of new technologies can help meet these goals. Clarify key carbon-related terms such as insetting, offsetting, and reduction to make informed decisions for your farm.

  3. Carbon Emissions Calculators: Learn how to calculate your farm’s greenhouse gas emissions using the Australian Dairy Carbon Calculator and DairyBase. These online tools are tailored for Australian dairy farmers and provide accurate insights to help you track and manage emissions.

  4. Practical Steps for Reducing Emissions: Explore the practical steps you can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on your farm. From adopting new technologies to implementing smarter management practices, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge to make informed choices that support both sustainability and profitability.

  1. Understanding the ACCU Scheme: Learn about the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) scheme, which rewards carbon reduction efforts with tradable credits. Understand the benefits and risks associated with participating in carbon farming projects, as well as the due diligence required to ensure compliance and maximize the potential financial and environmental gains.
