A total of 120 people attended these meetings, with seventy-nine of them being dairy farmers. Attendees received a document outlining the current structure and proposed changes, which is available here.
Objectives of the Meetings
The key objectives of these meetings were to:
1. Inform farmers about the RDP evolution and facilitate positive discussions.
2. Gather feedback for the Dairy NSW Board to consider as it progresses with the proposal.
3. Gain insights into the future role of Dairy NSW in the evolving dairy industry landscape.
Key Feedback from Meetings
Feedback across all regions was consistent, though some areas provided additional insights. Below is a summary of the main points raised:
Positives:
• Farmers acknowledged and respected the efficiency of staff and resource use under the proposed model.
• The benefits of easier access to a broader pool of expertise and talent for education, workforce development, and succession planning were widely appreciated.
• Streamlining engagement with state-based organisations, making it easier to work with Dairy Australia rather than coordinating with multiple regions, was seen as a positive outcome.
Areas of Concern:
• Maintaining a strong local presence was a priority for farmers.
• Ensuring regional relevance in content and activities, with continued influence from local needs and priorities.
• Preserving local support for programs such as:
o Young Dairy Network (YDN)
o Women in Dairy
o Cows Create Careers
o Local agricultural shows and school engagement programs
o Local grant opportunities
• Defining the future role and purpose of Dairy NSW within the proposed structure.
Farmer Engagement and Next Steps
These meetings were well-attended, with farmers actively participating in discussions, asking questions, and expressing their perspectives. The open dialogue with DNSW directors and staff was well received, with many appreciating the opportunity to have their voices heard.
The insights gathered will now be reviewed and considered by the Dairy NSW Board as it works to ensure that the evolution of RDPs aligns with the needs and expectations of NSW dairy farmers.
