Mental Health First Aid

The Dairy Tas team are really encouraged by the number of registrations we have already received from farm Supervisors/Managers.

The Mental Health First Aid Certificate Course, ran in conjuction with Rural Alive and Well, will be taking place on the 1 and 2 of December in Deloraine.

If you or a member of your team would like undertake this course at no charge, be sure to register ASAP as places are limited.

In the height of the Covid Pandemic, there was a lot of recognition given to our mental health, both at home and at work. A staggering 1 in 4 of us are likely to experience a mental health problem each year, and this can have an impact on our overall ability in the workplace.

Sometimes, it can even be our workplace which is influencing our mental health status. If left unaddressed, this can lead to further stress.

Employers should ensure they’re looking after the mental health of their employees, both for employee wellbeing and operational success. Now is the time to reduce the stigma around mental health in your dairy by having a Supervisor or Manager trained in mental health first aid.

This certificate course will provide your first aider with the appropriate knowledge and confidence to support a member of your team.

The main responsibilities of a mental health first aider are:

  • Spot the early signs and symptoms of mental ill-health
  • Start a supportive conversation with a colleague who may be experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress
  • Listen to the person non-judgmentally
  • Assess the risk of suicide or self-harm
  • Encourage the person to access appropriate professional support or self-help strategies
  • Escalate to the appropriate emergency services if necessary
  • Maintain confidentiality as appropriate
  • Complete critical incident documents as and when necessary
  • Protect themselves while performing their role
